Weight Answer 2

2.In December 1995, a probe launched from Jupiter's only artificial satellite (NASA's Galileo probe) plunged into Jupiter's atmosphere. Its weight on Earth was 3·4 kN. Jupiter's gravity is about 23 N/kg, whilst on Earth it's about 10 N/kg.

  1. What was the probe's mass?
    m = W÷g = 3400÷10 = 340 kg
  2. What was its weight as it hurtled to certain destruction on Jupiter?
    W = m×g = 340×23 = 7820 N or 7·8 kN
