A well-designed database will code data that appears many times, rather than entering full terms. e.g. in a database that records the gender of a person, it would be sensible to code as "M" or "F" rather than typing "Male" or "Female" each time. This also allows you to enter data much faster, as well as allowing you to easily validate the input.
