Hardware

computer

Computers are made up of lots of pieces of hardware. Usually, when people talk about computers, they are thinking about a base unit, monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Inside the base unit there are many different items, including:
CD drive ejecting disc
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU)
  • Floppy disk / Hard disk / CD / DVD drive
  • Random Access Memory (RAM)
  • Video chipset or "Graphics card"

RAM is used to store programs that are being used. It is temporary; its contents are lost when the computer is switched off.

All of these parts of a computer system are controlled by the operating system.
