Thickness Control & Radiation

The type of radiation used in monitoring and controlling the thickness of materials is important. Remember that gamma radiation is not much affected by thin materials, so that would be a poor choice in most cases.

Beta sources turn out to be the radiation type of choice, as their ionising effects are easily detected as an electrical current.

Alpha particles are, of course, too easily absorbed.
