AQA Science: Glossary - Discrete Variables

You may sometimes come across this term. It is a type of categoric variable whose values are restricted to whole numbers.

For example, the number of carbon atoms in a chain.

e.g. Dave's office is too hot so he designs a fan to cool himself down. He tries out different numbers of blades attached to a motor. The number of blades can only vary by a whole number: 1, 2, 3, etc. So this variable is discrete.

N.B. Don't write about discreet variables – this has a very different meaning!
