Reflection of Circular Waves

Another important type of reflection is that of circular waves off a plane barrier. The animation below shows progressively larger circular wavefronts heading towards a barrier:

reflection of circular waves off a barrier

When the waves hit the barrier, the incidence angle equals the angle of reflection. The directions of the reflected waves appear to originate behind the barrier (known as a virtual image).
