Potential Energy

This type of energy that is stored in a body and has the potential to do work. There are several types:

1. Gravitational (GPE or EP)
The energy a body has because it is near something with (normally) large gravity.

2. Chemical (CPE of EC)
Energy a body has because of what it is made. This is present in an electrical cell, explosives, food and petrol.

3. Elastic (EPE or EEl)
Energy stored when something is stretched or compressed. This is present in a pulled rubber band, or a squashed spring.

4. Nuclear
Energy stored in the nucleus of atoms that can be released during fission, fusion or radioactive decay.
