Weight Answer 3

3. Galileo's historic 14-year mission came to an abrupt end in September 2003 when NASA deliberately crashed it into Jupiter (to prevent the probe infecting any moons with bacteria that may have survived on board). The orbiter‘s mass was 2380 kg.
[ gJupiter = 23 N/kg gEarth = 9·8 N/kg ]

  1. What was the orbiter's weight on Earth?
    W = m×g = 2380×9·8 = 23324 N = 23 kN
  2. What would its weight have been falling into Jupiter?
    W = m×g = 2380×23 = 54740 N = 54·7 kN
