Let's see how you got on:
  1. 15/20
    Easy common factor of 5, so cancels down to 3/4
  2. 9/27
    Two obvious factors of 3 and 9. Always pick the highest:
    9/27 ... 1/3
  3. 14/42
    Both top and bottom are even numbers, so divide by 2 first:
    7/21 ... now obvious common factor of 7, so 1/3

I hope you got those right! Two key points came out of this:

  • always divide by the highest common factor, if you spot it.
  • if both numbers are even, divide by 2 first!

In (2) had we divided by 3, we'd have done: 9/27 ... 3/9 ... 1/3.
Not hard, but boring!
