Solving Basic Algebra

Claire from Worcester asked the following question:

Can you help me solve this: 9k + 8 = 45

Firstly, this is an equation with one unknown quantity (k) and the rest are just numbers. So let's work on those numbers first.

9k + 8 = 45

If we subtract 8 from both sides, it will be a little tidier:

9k + 8 - 8 = 45 - 8
9k = 37

Now we can simply divide both sides by 9 to end up with k:

k = 37 ÷ 9 = 4.11 (to 2 dp)

Job done!
