Longitudinal Waves

Here the oscillations are in the direction of wave motion.

animation of longitudinal wave motion

For this type, and transverse, no matter moves anywhere overall. The oscillations are around a central position - sometimes called the equilibrium position.

Examples of longitudinal waves are sound, ultrasound and earthquake P-waves.
