GCSE English

Apostrophe Use

?

Let us start with its use to indicate missing letters, so-called contractions.

You will be used to using words that contain an apostrophe, such as these:
don't, isn't and it's

These are simply shortened versions of:
do not, is not and it is.

The apostrophe indicates a missing letter. Importantly the contraction also joins together the two words into one.
