Servers

There are special types of computer called servers that manage resources on a network. They do this by running a specially designed operating system.

Examples of servers include:

File servers: run the software needed for the network, and store files created by users.

Print servers: queue documents sent to a printer, allowing users to continue working while waiting for printouts.

Web servers: make web pages available on a LAN ("Intranet") or on the Internet.
